The Valtellina Superiore DOCG is produced in the same valley in Lombardy, one of the largest valleys in the Alpine system. The Valtellina extends from the Orobiche Alps in the south to the Retico border to the north, starting from Colico until the Stelvio. The sunniest side of the valley is characterised by the thousands of small terraces where, up to 1000 metres above sea levels, vines have been cultivated for over 600 years. In the same area 4 sub-denominations of the Valtellina Superiore are cultivated, which are the Sassella, Inferno, Grumello and Valgella, which all take the name from their correspondent area.
The Valtellina Superiore Docg is served with very structured dishes such as game, roasted beef, stuffed meat, au braise, and seasoned cheese. The Valgella type is served in chalices for red wines, and in chalices Bordeaux when more aged. The temperature must be between 16-18°C, while the best period of use goes between 4 to 10 years after vintage.
Each label must carry a mention of the Controlled and Guaranteed Denomination of Origin besides all the other indications foreseen by law, such as: The determined Region from which the product originates; Denomination of the product composed of the combination of the variety of vine from which the wine originates and the geographic area in which that variety is cultivated; Nominal volume of the wine; Name or company name of the bottler and its registered address; Number and code of the bottler, which may also appear on the closing system (cork or cap); Name of the Country; Indication of the batch; Ecological indications.
