Orvieto Doc

Orvieto, a marvellous city that extends along the hill ranges to the right and left of the Paglia torrent, is the epicentre of one of the most important wine producing areas for the history and economy of Umbria. The production of Orvieto wine dates back to very antique times, when the first inhabitants of the city, the Etruscans, sensed that the characteristic tuff of the Orvieto area was favourable for the conservation of this product. Its appreciation in the centuries gone by is evidenced by numerous documents and anecdotes: the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio due to its fragrance, strength and colour defined it "the sun of Italy in a bottle"; Pope Gregory the XVIth even left dispositions in his will that he was to be washed with "Orvieto wine" before his burial. Orvieto Doc is produced in a large vineyard cultivation area that includes many of the municipalities of the provinces of Terni and Viterbo: it is therefore an inter-regional Doc, which includes white meal and desert wines of the Orvieto, Superior Orvieto, Classic Orvieto and Classic Superior Orvieto types (the Superior version should be aged for four months).

Consumption

The various types of Orvieto go with dishes such as fish hors d'oeuvres, sea fish soups, boiled shellfish and fish in general but also with roast white meats and young cheeses. They should be served at 10-12 °C, in wide goblets tapering towards the top and can be consumed for up to two years after bottling.
