Montefalco Doc

The winemaking tradition of this land has its origins in the Middle Ages thanks to the Benedictine monks who, with their work, reclaimed this land planting some of the most antique and typical Umbrian vines. Montefalco Doc is produced, besides in the municipality of the same name, also in the other nearby municipalities in the province of Perugia (Bevagna, Gualdo Cattaneo, Castel Ritaldi and Giano dell'Umbria). This denomination of origin includes Red, also Reserve and a White wine.

 

Consumption

The red wines of this controlled denomination of origin accompany casseroled meat dishes both pork and ovine, grilled and braised red meats, game, spicy mature pecorino cheeses. It should be served, in balloon wineglasses, at 16-18°C and be consumed up to the sixth year after harvest. The White wine instead is a wine for all meals to be served in flared wineglasses, to allow the concentration of the perfume and collect the aromas around the tongue, at 10-12°C.

Each label must carry a mention of the Controlled Denomination of Origin besides all the other indications foreseen by law, such as: The determined Region from which the product originates; Denomination of the product composed of the combination of the variety of the vine from which the wine originates and the geographic area in which that variety is cultivated; Nominal volume of the wine; Name or company name of the bottler and its registered address; Number and code of the bottler, which may also appear on the closing system (cork or cap); Name of the Country; Indication of the batch; Ecological indications.

Description
The method of production of Montefalco foresees the use of Sangiovese grapes for 60-70% and Sagrantino for 10-15%, with the eventual addition of other grapes for a maximum of 30%. For Red Montefalco ageing of 18 months is necessary, for Reserve Red of 30 months. As for White, Grechetto for at least 50%, Tuscan Trebbiano for at least 20-35% are used and the grapes of other vines can be added for a maximum of 15%
Characteristics
Upon visual examination Montefalco Doc presents a ruby red colour tending towards garnet; it is a wine with an intense and persistent fragrance, fruity, flowery and fine; to the taste it is dry, warm, rather soft, tannin to the right point and full-bodied. White Montefalco has a straw yellow colour, a slightly winey, fruity fragrance and a dry, slightly fruity, characteristic flavour. The minimum alcoholic content must be 12° for the Red, 12.5° for the Reserve and 11° for the White wines
