Genoa basil seeds can be planted throughout the year, but the planting is primarily concentrated into the spring period. The planting is done manually, whether on the greenhouse bench or in the ground, at a depth of half a centimeter, in special hedges called "tacche," which are approximately 120/160 cm.. The fertilizers used are primarily organic and employed in the preliminary preparation stages when the soil is enriched with calcium in order to insure a low acid content. The best water for basil is rainwater.
The whole plant is packaged in bunches with at least two groups of true leaves (in particular, a pair of completely flat leaves and the second pair forming) and a maximum of 4 pairs of true leaves. Two types of bunches can be identified: the smaller bunch or the "mazzetto" and the larger bunch or "bouquet."
