The Plain of the Sele river, in the province of Salerno, is bound to the North and East by the Picentini Mountains and South/South-East by the Cilento Mountains. On its banks runs for about 40 kilometres the coastal road that goes from Salerno to Agropoli and that runs through many famous localities of archaeological and cultural value. Near the mouth of the Sele river, one can visit Heraion, the sanctuary of Hera Argiva, whose discovery in 1934-40 is one of the most important of the last century in the field of archaeology. The sanctuary comprises the remains of the sacred temple of the greater divinity, other temples dedicated to minor divinities and a certain number of votive chapels belonging to different towns of Magna Grecia.
About 10 kilometres southwards one must absolutely stop to see the majestic Paestum, where the ruins of Poseidonia that have been exceptionally preserved rise; it was one of the most flourishing Greek colonies of the peninsular south. With its imposing Doric temples of Neptune, Cerere and Basilica, Paestum is one of the major archaeological centres of the Mediterranean and a destination for tourists from all over the world.
But the Sele plain does not only host important archaeological sites. The green landscapes, made of woods and of a flourishing Mediterranean habitat, together with a cuisine rich in specialities from the Campania region, make these places interesting also from the naturalistic and gastronomic viewpoint. One must therefore taste the Mozzarella di Bufala campana Pdo (water-buffalo mozzarella from Campania), a typical product of this land for centuries devoted to water-buffalo breeding.
Moving inland, towards Capaccio, there are numerous restaurants and farms that offer the visitor this pearl of the Mediterranean gastronomy. Besides mozzarella, great importance is given in this area to artichokes, grown since ancient times and discovered again in 1500. The best-known artichoke is the one called Carciofo di Paestum or Tondo di Paestum, which was recently granted Igp recognition. Again from the Sele plain and awaiting recognition is the annurca apple, an excellent typical variety of the Campania region.
