
The story of the Vico Lake valley is bound to legends and the mythology surrounding Hercules, creator of the Vico Lake formation. Today, we see the testimonial to a long history of volcanic activity by the volcano Vicano, whose image is still recognizable today by the ridges in the crater's basin that encircle the lake. The Reserve extends over 3200 hectares, subdivided almost equally into tall forest, lake, and crop cultivation. The whole territory is covered in lush tall forests that extend over approximately 1000 hectares. The greatest extension covers the slopes of the crater basin, giving origins to a strip of woodland that encircles the whole valley.
The entire lake valley could tell the story of millennia and the delicate balances that govern nature; one only has to be a careful observer and nature lover to discover that even the smallest blade of grasshides these treasures. In the Vico Lake Reserve, it is possible to takes walks and excursions of various levels. These range from short walks along the lakeshores, to the much longer climbs on the path to the "Pozzo del Diavolo," or the Devil's Well. Some paths are marked with wooden signs; others are easy to follow by going along the beaten path.
There are the more difficult paths that cut through the forests, and open one's eyes to breathtaking panoramas. Walking from here, and once on the way to Ronciglione, one can relax in one of the many picnic spots with their unforgettable scenery, and perhaps even taste something directly from the land such as the local peanuts or chestnuts, which are the leading resources of this area.
The area near Vico Lake and the Cimini makes Ronciglione an extremely viable summer holiday spot with a wonderful environment. There is a characteristic medieval village, part of which developed between the 1500s and the 1700s, with spacious roads running past noble palaces. The Castello della Rovere, castle of the oak, also known as "I Torrioni" or The Towers," is a construction that goes back to the high Medieval, and served to defend the village.
The castle belonged to the Prefects of Vico, to the Anguillara, to the Rovere and finally to the Farnese. The Fontana degli Unicorni, Fountain of the Unicorns (1581) is figuratively interesting, Attributed by some to Vignola,while others believe it to be a masterpiece by Antonio Gentili daFaenza. The ancientchurch of Santa Maria della Provvidenzais important, and dates back to the 11th or 12th century;inside the center of this church is a work depicting Christ giving the blessing with cherubs and angels, dating back to 1400. The route from this part of Tuscia was an itinerary made up of a series of alternating highly unique visual landscapes, penetrating the heart of this country, rich in history and full of extremely important monuments.
