Wine and taste road of Rimini's hills

Piazza centrale del comune di Montecolombo

It is from its border position and from the close presence of the seacoast and hills that the Rimini territory derives the richness of its own basket of typical products, dominated by its wines and extra virgin olive oils. This land's grape and wine heritage finds its best expression in the Colli di Rimini Doc wines, which include Trebbiano-based whites and reds obtained from Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The best olive growing traditions, on the other hand, produced Colline di Romagna olive oil, which were granted Dop status in August 2003.

The course of the itinerary fundamentally follows the Pedecollinare route, that is the Strada delle Colline di Romagna (road of the Romagna hills) that runs in the hinterland parallel to the coast. Ideally, the journey starts from Santarcangelo di Romagna, a locality of the Rimini hinterland, winds through Valmarecchia and up among the mountains that characterize the townships of Poggio, Berni, Torriana and Verucchio. The great calcareous rocks on which have been built fortresses and towers are characteristic of Valmarecchia.

While covering the distance that from Verucchio leads to San Marino the landscape reveals all its beauty made of contrasts between the calcareous rocks and the tilled countrysides. The road then winds into the town of Rimini, arriving there through an unusual area, Colle Paradiso, from which one can enjoy a beautiful panorama of the district.

Once past Valmarecchia, the road runs through Valle Del Marano, an area characterized by green hills covered with vineyards and olive-groves, and Val Conca. The townships of Val Conca, like Montescudo, Montecolombo, Gemmano and Montefiore Conca are connected by means of several roads, each one extremely interesting for the landscapes it offers. One must not miss the Grotte di Onferno (Onferno caves) that represent the most important natural sight of the territory.

The final section of the itinerary descends into the valley and reaches Morciano di Romagna, Saludecio, Mondaino and Montegridolfo, plunged in a green countryside dotted by farmhouses and ancient and fortified rural villages. Following the coast of the riverbed of Conca and touching San Giovanni In Marignano, the journey along the wine and taste road of Rimini's hills ends up in Cattolica.
