The road of San Daniele: through historic residences and hams

Facciata del duomo di Udine con scalinata

Located in the heart of Friuli, San Daniele stands on one of the Tagliamento hills, in a splendid scenario created by the Pre-alpine hills and Carnic Alps. From the top of the hill, above the Cathedral, there is a splendid view of the Fruili plain, full of fields, meadows and groves. Fortified historical residences and the sites of production of the well-known San Daniele raw ham, represent the attractions of the verdant territory to the northwest of Udine.

The geographical position represents the fortune of San Daniele. It, in fact, is at the origin of that particular and unrepeatable microclimate, that constitutes the principal secret, together with respect of the antique techniques of processing, of the production of San Daniele hams.

And the pork-based product is the protagonist of the exhibition, called Holiday Atmosphere (Aria di Festa), held each year in San Daniele in the last week of August. Under an artistic/architectural profile, there are many works that witness the long history of the town in the province of Udine: from the Cathedral to the Town Hall, from the Monte di Pietà building to the churches of San Daniele and Sant'Antonio Abate. Without forgetting a very important cultural institute: the Guarneriana Library, one of first in order of time and still one of the best in Italy. Not art alone, but also nature in SAN DANIELE, where in the north-western part, the hills that surround the town slope down to the Tagliamento river, whose wide pebble bed, crossed by arms of water, strongly contrasts with the green of the surrounding banks.

Not far away one also finds the San Daniele lake, surrounded by low reeds and shrubs, the last remains of the lacustrine basins contained by the morainic amphitheatre of Tagliamento. And the history of San Daniele is exactly linked to its proximity to two rivers - Tagliamento and Corno - and to its geographic position, mid way between the mountains and the sea. San Daniele, in fact, was a real pole of convergence of populations: the Ligurians, Etruscans, Celts (or Gauls), Romans, Ostrogots, Byzantines, Long bards, Franks, Ungers and Avers all passed through here. Every one of them left a more or less profound trace, especially in the place names. San Daniele was also the ideal place to exchange of the products of the mountains with those of the plant; it was, therefore, an attraction of a commercial nature. The frequent medieval and modern fairs, three a year, are the demonstration of the commercial efficiency of San Daniele throughout the centuries.
