In Upper Tuscia between the towns of wine and tuff

Le cantine dei Colli Etruschi Viterbesi

Upper Tuscia has been a land of wines since the Etruscan era. Its wine road runs between the six Doc areas of Vignanello, Aleatico di Gradoli, Orvieto, Colli Etruschi Viterbesi, Montefiascone, "Est! Est!! Est!!!", revealing some of the most suggestive corners of the region. To get an idea of the beautiful landscape of these lands and of the peculiarity of the settlements built on tuff, one must visit the area north of Viterbo close to the Tiber and bordering with Umbria region. In addition to its wines - noteworthy are the Orvieto and Colli Etruschi Viterbesi Doc wines - this area is also rich in interesting historical and cultural attractions.

The itinerary starts in Bagnoregio, an ancient Etruscan town rich in precious Renaissance elements. In its neighbourhood has been built, probably following the project of Bramante, the small church of S. Bonaventura, a Greek cross-plant building with a neoclassical façade. Also attributed to Bramante is the beautiful bell-tower of the church of S. Annunziata or S. Agostino, whose primitive Romanic structure has undergone many remakings in the course of time.

From the belvedere one can enjoy the unusual panorama of Valle dei Calanchi from which emerges, like an island suspended in a vacuum, Civita di Bagnoregio, known all over the world as the dying village, because of the progressive erosion of its inhabited centre. Civita rises, in fact, on a tufaceous rock spur in the centre of an indented basin. Water and the frailness of the clayey soil have been its long-standing terminal disease, much more than the earthquake that in 1695 razed it nearly to the ground, destroying its consolidated power. This picturesque village, connected to the civilization of 21st century by a thin straight stretch of a bridge that can be crossed only on foot, is an absolute must. The occasion is also good for tasting the oil of these parts, the perfect Canino Pdo, with which the ancient but small oil-mills prepare savoury bruschette (baked slices of bread).

After Bagnoregio one arrives in Lubriano, another town built on typical medieval style tuff, and then Castiglione in Teverina, placed on a hill that dominates the Tiber valley. Here too the medieval origin of the historical centre is documented by the presence of admirable architectural structures such as the Rocca dei Monaldeschi, built around 1351. For the followers of Bacchus the visit is advised in the first week of August, during the wine feast of the Tiber hills that offers everyone the possibility of tasting local vintage wines. Noteworthy in the neighbourhood are also Graffignano, Celleno and Civitella D'Agliano, important centres in terms of wine and food as well as history and culture.
